H2@Work Employee Spotlight: Steven Delmonaco

As part of United States National Engineers Week, we are proud to recognize Steven Delmonaco, Director of Electrolyzer Engineering at Plug. This week is about celebrating engineers who turn complex ideas into real world solutions, and Steven’s journey reflects the impact that hands on engineering can have on both technology and people.

Steve Delmonaco

Leading Hydrogen Infrastructure Engineering

Steven leads the engineering team responsible for hydrogen infrastructure system designs across generation and compression, storage, and dispensing. His work spans GenEco and GenFuel systems, helping shape how hydrogen is produced, stored, and delivered. At the core of his role is building practical systems that customers can rely on at scale.

From Intern to Building New Teams

Steven’s story with Plug began as an intern, back when fuel cells were the company’s only product. When the opportunity came to form a dedicated hydrogen team, he returned full time to help build it from the ground up. That early trust gave him the chance to grow alongside the company and take on increasing responsibility.

Why Plug Was the Right Place

Steven describes Plug as an ideal environment for an early career engineer. From day one, he was encouraged to be hands on and directly influence products and outcomes. He values the freedom to explore different interests, develop strengths, and grow with the organization. The pace, flexibility, and forward-looking mindset continue to make the work exciting and rewarding.

A Defining Engineering Moment

One of Steven’s most extraordinary experiences was building Plug’s first electrolyzer system and arrays. He helped onboard a new team, create an original design, manage fabrication, and physically turn on the first fully operating 1 MW system. That work later expanded into Plug’s internal production plants in Georgia, marking major milestones for the company.

Bringing Teams Together Through Change

Over time, Steven faced the challenge of merging teams following multiple acquisitions. Each group brought strong talent and different ways of working. Keeping projects moving while building one cohesive team was not easy. He approached this by focusing on physical deliverables and customer experience first, then working with mentors and leaders to decide where to align processes and where to embrace differences as strengths.

Why Hydrogen Matters

Steven is excited by the scale and range of hydrogen applications. He believes this technology has the potential to be one of the most impactful developments engineers can make today. The systems being built now could support everyday life for generations to come, which makes the work deeply meaningful.

A Guiding Principle

Steven lives by a simple question: If not me, then who? If not now, then when? He uses it to judge what matters most and to take responsibility at the right moment, both at work and in life.

Engineering Beyond the Office

Outside of Plug, Steven has a long-standing passion for cars. He bought his first Firebird with his brother in junior high school and has been modifying and racing cars ever since. That same curiosity and drive show up in his engineering work every day.

During National Engineers Week, we are proud to recognize Steven Delmonaco and the many engineers at Plug who turn vision into reality through skill, creativity, and commitment.
