H2@Work Employee Spotlight: Kaitlyn Kemp

Kaitlyn Kemp is a Process Engineer at Plug, where she works on process calculations, simulations, safety reviews, and documentation for the 5 MW USA Electrolyzer. More recently, she has also supported data analysis work for GenFuel. Her role allows her to combine technical details with a bigger picture focus on clean energy.

From Intern to Full Time Engineer

Kaitlyn’s journey with Plug began while she was a student at RPI. She completed her first internship in 2022 and enjoyed the experience so much that she returned for two more internships. Those summers eventually led to a full-time role. Staying in the region while growing her career made the transition feel natural and rewarding.

Why Plug Was the Right Choice

At school, Kaitlyn studied chemical engineering alongside sustainability studies. She wanted a role where both disciplines mattered. Plug gave her the opportunity to apply engineering skills while contributing to green energy solutions that make a positive impact beyond the workplace.

Seeing the Work Come to Life

One of Kaitlyn’s most memorable experiences came during her first internship, when she traveled to Texas to verify her calculations on a live system. She saw ultra-pure water being produced and helped with troubleshooting on site. That hands on exposure made the work feel real and meaningful.

Approaching Challenges as a Team

Kaitlyn says she has been fortunate to work with supportive teams. When challenges do arise, she collaborates closely with teammates and vendors to find common ground. That teamwork helps move projects forward smoothly.

Excited About What Comes Next

What excites Kaitlyn most about hydrogen is the range of possibilities. She sees it as a promising green energy source that can help address climate change and improve energy independence. Being part of that progress keeps her motivated.

A Guiding Mindset

Kaitlyn often comes back to the idea of being the change you want to see in the world. She applies that mindset both at work and in her personal life, focusing on small actions that add up to meaningful impact.

Giving Back Beyond Work

Outside of Plug, Kaitlyn stays busy with sports and community service. She is a JV girls lacrosse coach at a local high school and previously played at RPI. She is also a dog foster and volunteers at a local animal shelter, finding joy in giving back and supporting her community.
